Crossings: A Migration and Mobility Reading Circle NOVEMBER EDITION

A small facilitated online participative space where we meet monthly to read, reflect, disagree, and think together about lived experiences of migration and mobility through stories, essays and letters.

This month’s reading: The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2009)

This month’s question

When you move somewhere new, what little things unsettle you, and what are you scared or shy to admit, even to yourself?

What to Expect

  1. Register your commitment to join: Complete the short registration form and tell us what draws you to the reading circle and this month’s reading. Upon signing up, you will receive a Zoom link to join. Make sure you add it to your calendar!

  2. Read before we meet: This month we are reading The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2009). The essay follows a young Nigerian woman's pursuit of a better life in America becomes a journey through loneliness, exploitation, unexpected intimacy, and the complicated meaning of home.  (Reading link)

  3. Bring a question or reflection: Come with one passage, feeling or question that stayed with you. Come with a response for this month’s question: When you move somewhere new, what little things unsettle you, and what are you scared or shy to admit, even to yourself? You are welcome to draw on your own experiences of migrating, being mobile and returning.

  4. Read together, differently: We will briefly introduce the text and then explore it together through a facilitated discussion and breakout-rooms. Some returns may be joyful, some painful, and many may be both.
